An writer's dream is to turn the moniker 'writer' into 'author.' A writer dreams of touring the countryside with stops at bookstores with lines of people waiting at the door to buy YOUR BOOK. In the last few years, we've seen a decline of these kinds of book tours and an upscale online version called blog tours. Virtual book tours. Online book tours. Whichever you want to call it, authors are coming around to the idea that promoting their books isn't that bad if they don't want to leave the house to do it and don't want to spend as much money.
Paul Doiron is one of the chosen few who did embark on an offline book tour. His experience is worth reading:
"When I used to imagine actually becoming an author, this experience was what I hoped would happen. I dreamed of glamor. What the past few years have taught me, however, is that the publisher-sponsored book tour is now a rarity, and I am one of the lucky ones (and luck, as we all know, is fleeting). More and more writers are using blog tours and even Skype visits to get the word out about their new titles. In a few years we may look back on touring the way we do Borders: as an idea whose time has gone."
