There was a very interesting article in the Los Angeles Times recently about self-publishing and how it is affected by the traditional houses. It seems more and more authors are going that route bypassing traditional publishers to gain more money and in some cases better results in terms of sales.
It's interesting to note just a few short years ago, every author's dream was to get a traditional publishing contract. Self-publishing, while not new, was still looked upon as inferior. Even today you'll find reviewers who are not willing to review self-published books. The reasoning I am presuming is because maybe they have seen too many badly edited self-published books in the past. That's my guess. Personally, I've seen quite a few good ones and am in awe of the author in taking that gigantic leap.
Joe Konrath is one of those people. In this article, he states he is waiting for his traditionally published books to go out of print so he can grab the rights and self-publish. What I find fascinating about this is that most authors go the opposite direction - self-publishing then waiting for the traditional contract.
I love this!
And we can all credit the Internet to opening doors never dreamed possible for us.
